With the recent economic downturn and unstable employment market, many local families are looking for opportunities to start their own business.  According to the Small Business Association (SBA), small businesses have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years.

This was certainly true for the Wasielewski family of Muskego. They were searching for a way to expand their income without cutting into time spent with family.  After brainstorming, intense research and many taste tests, Sweet Delight Kettle Corn was launched last year. According to Muskego native, Laurie Wasielewski, “We’re confident we have the best product around. The kettle is so hot the sugar melts and glazes the pop corn which creates a sweet crunchy taste.”

The corn is sold in two sizes: a small bag that contains 16 cups of popped corn for $4.00 and a large bag that contains 24 cups for $6.00.  With just four ingredients - corn oil, salt, sugar and mushroom popcorn - kettle corn is a sweeter and fresher alternative to microwave popcorn. There aren’t any added chemicals, preservatives or flavorings.

Kettle corn was originally introduced to the United States in the 18th century, and has made a comeback in the 21st century. As such, the Wasielewski’s are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the renewed interest. They say that news of their product is spreading fast and word of mouth is their primary form of marketing.

Parents Jeff and Laurie produce the kettle corn. Their children, Jordan and Jenna, handle sales. “It was a great way for us to teach our kids about handling money, saving for college and how to communicate confidently in public,” Jeff explained.

Currently their kettle corn is sold exclusively at community events including festivals and farmer’s markets.  The Wasilewski's explained that they also take part in fundraising events, with a portion of proceeds donated to the cause. Free samples are always available at every event, but they warn that "scrumptious kettle corn has developed a very loyal following. Some even say it’s addicting!"
