Two Muskego Wrestlers Advance to the Finals

Roland Dunlap and Jordan Gruettner will wrestle the state title at their respective weight classes tonight.

Two of the five Muskego High School wrestlers who traveled to Madison for the state meet will advance to the finals tonight.

Roland Dunlap (189-pound weight class) won by decision against Justin Birschbach of Fond du Lac. He faces Shane Hughes of Arrowhead for the final.

"Roland's strength is take downs so that's what he did," said Coach Sean Fortmann. "He just wore his opponent down."

Jordan Gruettner (215-pound weight class) pinned Tyler Lecher of Brookfield East. He will meet Steve Sizer of West Bend West in the final meet.

"Jordan is close to being the pins leader, that's just what he does," Fortmann stated. "Still, it's incredible to pin an opponent in the semifinals."

All losses at the state level can be heartbreaking, but it's especially appropriate for Justin Scherkenbach. He lost his semifinal round, 8-6, in overtime to Logan Cudd from River Falls.

"Justin was down 5-2 in the 3rd period but he got an escape and a take down with only 25 second left to tie it up," said Coach Sean Fortmann. "It was a great effort."

Tyler Quartullo lost by decision to Thomas Allen of Menasha, 4-1.

"After a take down in the first period, Tyler suffered a reverse in the 3rd period," Fortmann said. "The young man he wrestled just got the upper hand."

Tyler's brother, Austin, lost 4-2 in his bid to grab 3rd place to Bill Prochniewski of Waukesha South.

Justin and Tyler still have one meet to go, the consolation round for 3rd place.

"It's tough to lose in the semifinals, but they'll be ready to go tomorrow," Fortmann said.

Consolation meets start at 11 am, and the finals begin at 6 pm at the Kohl Center at the University of Wisconsin Madison.
