Waterford Man Charged in 2008 Muskego Copper Theft

DNA analysis of blood left at the crime scene reveals suspect, 36, had stolen copper from a We Energies substation that was under construction.

A Waterford man is facing charges for breaking into a We Energies substation in Muskego in 2008 after a DNA analysis of blood found there linked him to the crime.

Chad B. Greil, 36, was charged in Waukesha County circuit Court Tuesday with one count of entry onto a construction site. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 18, 2008, Greil allegedly broke into a substation being built at S86W22270 Janesville Road in order to steal copper. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found two empty spools that used to contain copper, white synthetic fiber draped over barbed wire and fresh blood at the end of tubing on the site.

The state crime laboratory was able to run a DNA analysis of the blood in September 2010, which revealed it to be Greil’s blood left at the scene. We Energies told investigators Greil has never worked for the company and would have no reason to be at the site.

Greil is scheduled ot make his first appearance in court Aug. 8.
