BloodCenter of Wisconsin Hosts Pregame Platelet Sundays

Platelet donors to receive green and gold blanket

Milwaukee, Wis. – October 7, 2014 – BloodCenter of Wisconsin is inviting platelet donors to special Pregame Platelet Sundays being held at four of its donor center locations, now through December. In appreciation for making a life-saving gift to patients in need, all attempting donors will receive a football-themed blanket. Donors will also be treated to a hot breakfast and have the opportunity to watch pregame TV coverage in the company of fellow fans.

A platelet donation made on a Sunday can do the most good for a patient in need because platelets can only be used for five days after donation, and are most needed Monday through Friday when surgeries often occur. Attempting platelet donors must be current whole blood donors to be eligible for donation. Please call 1-877-BE-A-HERO (1-877-232-4376) to schedule an appointment and determine eligibility.

Pregame Platelet Sundays are being held at the following donor center sites:

Greenfield Donor Center
Open every Sunday
6 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Waukesha Donor Center
Open the second and fourth Sunday of each month
6 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

Wauwatosa Donor Center
Open the third and fifth Sunday of each month
6 a.m. – Noon

West Bend Donor Center
Open the first Sunday of each month
6 a.m. – Noon

Platelets help the blood to clot and can benefit people who are battling cancer, recovering from injuries or fighting blood disorders. This video shares a personal message of gratitude from platelet recipient Diane, a leukemia survivor— and football fan — who was able to live out a dream thanks to blood and platelet donors.

Anyone 16 or older who has previously donated whole blood, is in general good health and meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to donate platelets. Parental consent is required for 16-year-olds to donate. The entire process takes about 90 minutes. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes birth date.
