Caterpillar, Inc. Pulling Jobs out of Milwaukee Area

Move from South Milwaukee to Arizona affects hundreds of area Caterpillar, Inc. workers, families.

SOUTH MILWAUKEE — Major news out of South Milwaukee this morning that is bound to affect employees living throughout the metro Milwaukee area.

The Journal Sentinel is reporting that Caterpillar, Inc. is moving its engineering and technology jobs from its South Milwaukee mining equipment division to Tuscon, Ariz.

"This is truly a very sad day for Milwaukee and Wisconsin as these jobs have existed in the region for 136 years," said Tim Sullivan to the Journal Sentinel. Sullivan is the former chief executive of Bucyrus International of South Milwaukee, which Caterpillar acquired in 2011 for $8.8 billion.

Caterpillar employs about 240 at its manufacturing plant in South Milwaukee, according to the Journal Sentinel report, down from 800 a few years ago.

South Milwaukee Mayor Erik Brooks told the Journal Sentinel the company told him 10 to 15 jobs from his city will be moved to Arizona this year and approximately 200 jobs could be moved over the next five to seven years.
