Color Couture: Girl Scouts To Tour PPG Plant, Learn Science Behind Color
STEM professions are often dominated by men. PPG Oak Creek and the YPO are teaming up to teach Girl Scouts about the science of color.

OAK CREEK - PPG in Oak Creek is hosting more than 60 local Girl Scouts tomorrow for Color Couture, an event looking at the science of color. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 in the afternoon.
The Scouts will tour the PPG facility, speaking with the scientists and engineers about how they make color. PPG specializes in coatings - wall paint, food cans, industrial coatings on motorcycle parts - and its scientists will show the girls how they do their job. The event is hosted by the Oak Creek Young Professionals Organization.
According to the National Science Foundation, women make up half of the college-educated workforce in the US. But, women make up only 29% of the science and engineering workforce and account for just 22% of chemical engineers.

Jack Marshall, PPG's Regional Plant Manager, believes in the event. “We’re a chemistry company. It’s a bit of an obligation on our part to build that future talent,” he said.
Marshall has two daughters and wants to ensure they see science as a professional option, citing a frequent drop off in middle school of girls’ interest in science. But, “girls are good at it,” he said. “They’re smart.”
