Democrat Steps Forward in State Assembly Race
South Milwaukee resident Elizabeth Coppola is running as a Democrat in the state Assembly election this fall.
The deadline for state Assembly candidates to turn in nomination papers finally brought a Democrat into the race.
Elizabeth Coppola of South Milwaukee turned in 400 signatures—double the 200 necessary to get on the ballot, according to Wisconsin Election Watch.
Coppola serves on the Milwaukee County Social Development Commission and was a 2011 graduate of Emerge Wisconsin, a seventh-month training program that prepares Democratic women to run for office.
Wisconsin Election Watch also reported the five Republicans who previously announced they would enter the race—South Milwaukee resident Jason "Red" Arnold, Oak Creek Alderman Ken Gehl, local tea party officer Larry Gamble, business executive Chris Kujawa and school choice advocate Jessie Rodriguez—all submitted nomination papers.
The quintet will face off in a primary Oct. 22, with the winner taking on Coppola in the Nov. 19 general election.
The candidates are seeking to replace Mark Honadel, who resigned last week to take an undisclosed job in the private sector.
