Fruit and nut trees are an important part of a sustainable and socially just urban food system:
Growing food in our yards and urban environment gives us power over what we eat and how we spend our food dollars. Established fruit and nut trees (and shrubs and vines) produce more food than veggie gardens, plus require less work and space. Nuts offer a local source of important fats, proteins and calories. Plus, trees have many positive environmental impacts. They cool our city in the summer, slow water in heavy rain events to help minimize flooding, and absorb carbon to help slow global climate change.
