Oak Creek High School puts on its first performance of the new year with the classic musical Bye Bye Birdie.

Bye Bye Birdie is set in the 1950s and tells the story of popular rock star Conrad Birdie, who, much like Elvis, is drafted into the military at the height of fame.

Birdie’s financially-stressed manager, Albert, arranges a contest in which a lucky fan gets to kiss Conrad on The Ed Sullivan Show before he leaves. Kim MacAfee, a teen from Sweet Apple, Ohio, is the lucky fan, which doesn’t exactly go well with her boyfriend, Hugo.

Casting and planning for the play started all the way back in November. Over the past three months, 22 cast members, 25 crew and 15 pit musicians have brought the show to life under the direction of Elizabeth Fritz and Nola Armbrust.

A lot of work and even more moving parts goes into any stage production and musicals are especially intricate, but Fritz is confident in the production.

“It’s come along a lot, especially in the last two weeks," she said. "All the pieces are there.”

Fritz says she chose the musical because of its many humorous and entertaining moments as well as its widespread popularity.

Bye Bye Birdie opens in Oak Creek High School’s Small Theater with Thursday, Friday and Saturday night performances, all beginning at 7 p.m. The production returns again the following weekend on Friday and Saturday night and closes with a special Sunday matinee starting at 2 p.m.
