From the Wisconsin Election Watch Election Blog,
MADISON – Jim Palmer, the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Professional Police Association, announced this morning he will not run for Wisconsin Attorney General as an independent candidate.
In a two page statement, Palmer said: “On the one hand, I’ve received a significant degree of support for my interest in being an independent candidate for Attorney General. On the other hand, that support appears to be outweighed by the pragmatic consideration that I need to choose a party if I have any hope of winning. Though I am a devout believer in the art of compromise, choosing a party at this point in time is a personal concession that I am not yet prepared to make.”

The President of state’s main police officers union said that there are issues that need to be dealt with by the next Attorney General. One issue he highlighted was on the shortage of Assistant District Attorneys in Wisconsin. He argued that the decade-long problem, “creates delays and forces plea bargains on crimes that our prosecutors simply do not have the time or resources to prosecute.”
With Palmer not running, it leaves the current field of candidates unchanged. Candidates that are seeking the position of Attorney General include Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel (R-Waukesha) who is running as a Republican while Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne (D-Madison) and State Representative Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) seek the Democratic Party nomination.
