Live 50-Year-Old Explosives Found In Oak Creek Home: Report

Police in Oak Creek detonated 50-year-old explosives found in an ammunition box in a resident's basement after they were found "unstable."

OAK CREEK, WI — Authorities in Oak Creek are reporting that the contents of an old ammunition box were the reason officials had to remotely detonate a batch of explosives on Sunday.

According to the Oak Creek police reports, officers responded to the 10400 block of S. Bridgewater Drive just after 2:30 p.m. on June 10 on a report of suspicious activity.

Reports stated that the resident at this property found and opened an old ammunition box that belonged to his grandfather. Writing on the box and an item inside the box read "1965: Safety Fuses 10 Min Red," and was bulged open, with powder leaking out the side of the box.

According to the Oak Creek Fire Department, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office was contacted for their Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit. According to reports, they were old railroad flares.

According to the fire department, the explosives were safely removed, however, due to their unstable nature, they need to be disposed of immediately.

They were taken to a remote area in Oak Creek near 301 W Ryan Rd. near the police station where they were detonated at approximately 4:45 p.m.in a safe manner to ensure that there were injuries to anybody.

The detonation reportedly caused several large detonation 'reports' to be heard - and in close proximity - felt.
