An Oak Creek High School student has been named an All-State Scholar, an honor bestowed to the highest-achieving public- and private-school seniors.
Joohee Son was one of 120 recognized by the state Department of Public Instruction out of more than 600 nominated.
Nominees have academic records that are superior as determined by grade-point average and college admissions test scores, according to a DPI news release.

Each school nominated graduating seniors based on enrollment. Students were asked to submit a brief statement, which the selection panel used as a tie-breaker.
But unlike in previous years, Son will not receive a monetary award. The U.S. Congress scrapped funding for the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship program, which was linked with Wisconsin's All-State Scholar program.

“Wisconsin’s All-State Scholars are among our highest-achieving students. Their academic accomplishments are truly remarkable and worthy of praise,” State Superintendent Tony Evers said in a news release. “I encourage these students to pursue their dreams of postsecondary education even though they will no longer receive a federal, merit-based scholarship to accompany being named an All-State Scholar.”
