PPG to Lay off 1,700 Workers Worldwide; Fate of Oak Creek Workers Not Known Yet

PPG is laying off 1,700 workers worldwide, it is not known yet whether the roughly 500 Oak Creek employees will be impacted.

OAK CREEK -- PPG, a global manufacturer of paints, coatings, optical products, specialty materials, glass and fiber glass, said it's cutting about 1,700 jobs worldwide, or about 3.6 percent of its workforce.

According to a Milwaukee Business Journal report, PPG operates a plant at 10800 S. 13th St. in Oak Creek that employs about 500. There is no word yet whether the layoffs will affect any employees in Oak Creek.

PPG reported a third-quarter loss of $201 million, or 75 cents per share, in October and promised to review cost-cutting options, according to reports.

The company's chairman and chief executive, Michael McGarry, said the cuts are fueled by "continued slow overall growth in global demand."
