FRANKLIN, WI — Authorities say a 56-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged after an apparent road rage incident ended with a shooting outside the Franklin Sam's Club on July 27.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County, Luis Angel Cardona-Contreras has been charged with one count of first-degree reckless injury — use of a dangerous weapon.

When questioned by police following the shooting, Cardona-Contreras said that he was upset with a 45-year-old driver who cut him off in traffic, according to the criminal complaint. Cardona-Contreras, who was driving a BMW X5, said he "got carried away" in the moment.

When police were able to question the 45-year-old man, he told police that he pulled into the Sam's Club parking lot on July 27 after getting into an apparent road rage incident with Cardona-Contreras.

Investigators say the man parked in the lot, and had just started walking toward Sam's Club from his truck when Cardona-Contreras pulled his car up to the man, and his family, and began to yell at them.

At one point during the confrontation, investigators say a woman got out of one of the vehicles and attempted to calm the situation down by standing between the victim and Cardona Contreras. Her attempt was not enough to prevent a shooting, police said.

According to the criminal complaint, Cardona-Contreras raised a handgun at the victim, only to have the victim extend his arm to "slap" the gun toward the ground. Investigators said Cardona-Contreras raised his gun a second time, and shot the victim in the chest.

If convicted, Cardona-Contreras faces up to 15 years behind bars, in addition to any fines he may incur.
