Track and Field Athletes Ready for State

Knights will be represented in eight different events at state meet.

The Oak Creek Knights will be well-represented at the WIAA Track & Field State Championships Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The Knights fared very well in the field events at the Mukwonago High School sectional meet, qualifying three athletes for state in four events.

Rafael Saez led the way for the Knights with a first-place finish in both the shot put and discus competitions. He dominated the discus competition with a throw of 166-02.

Competition in the throwing events is deep at state, but Saez's 56-05.50 throw in the shot put at the sectional event would be fourth-best of the remaining 24 competitors.

Reymond Overland qualified for a trip to La Crosse in the high jump with a second-place (6-1) finish at sectionals.

The final field event qualifier is also Oak Creek's only female participant to make it. Amanda Thiel's third-place (34-09.50) finish in the shot put was good enough to earn a spot among the final 24 in La Crosse.

Not to be outdone by their field counterparts, the runners of the Knights' track team also had a very solid showing at sectionals. Three relay teams and one individual competitor ran their way to La Crosse.

Scott Vieau was the lone Knight to qualify individually, with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash. His 51.18-second time will put him right in the middle of the pack with the runners this weekend.

Rounding out the state qualifiers for Oak Creek are three boys relay teams. The 200-meter, 400-mter and 800-meter teams all finished in the top three.

Leading the way was the 800-meter team of Ben Quentin, Tony Rodriguez, Ryan Clementz, Joey Dzierzewski, Jake Schmidt and Devin Kuick, who finished first place with a time of 8:04.62.

Vieau, Quentin, Dzierzewski, Reymond Overland, Zak Lenski and Thomas Overland paced the 400-meter team to a second place finish at 3:26.36, and the same group finished third in the 200-meter with a 1:33.03 finish.

All three teams look to run personal records at the state event, and the La Crosse track is known for being very fast.
