WE Energies Says No Power Rate Hike for 2017

News could be good for consumers, businesses; critics say Wisconsin rates need to actually decrease to fit regional averages

OAK CREEK — Consumers might not have to deal with higher electric or natural gas rates in 2017.

According to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Reports, WEC Energy Group, the parent company of WE Energies, filed a request with state regulators this week declining a rate increases for the coming year.

WE Energies has said rates had escalated over the years for a variety of reasons, primarily to cover the $2.3 billion coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek and the natural gas plant in Port Washington.

Environmental controls to cut mercury and other toxic elements also drove cost increases, WE Energies has said.

Critics say Wisconsin energy rates are too high and that WE Energies should actually be seeking a price decrease to bring their rates in line with regional averages.

When you hover over Wisconsin on the map, you can see the historical price increases from 2000-present.

You can read more from the Journal Sentinel, including why a rate increase was not requested for 2017, and the voice of several strong critics of WE Energies, who believe rates are too high already.
