Who Funds the American Federation of Children in Wisconsin?

MADISON – The American Federation of Children has played a big part in financing the 2013 elections in Wisconsin during what is considered to be an off year for elections.

The majority of their campaign spending comes from the American Federation of Children Action Fund’s Independent Expenditure Committee from Wisconsin. Wisconsin Election Watch looks into who has funded the American Federation of Children’s political efforts in the Badger State.

As of the last campaign finance reporting period ending on November 4th, the American Federation of Children Independent Expenditure Committee has $15,939.91 on hand despite not raising any money.  A further analysis of Government Accountability Board records found that the American Federation of Children did not raise money for its independent expenditure fund in 2013. However, most of their money was raised in 2012 when they received $380,000 from their parent organization, the American Federation of Children, during the Fall 2012 pre-election reporting period.  In addition, the Federation received $40,000 from the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce on November 5. 2012.

The American Federation of Children is a 501(c)4 organization and is not required to disclose who has donated to their organization. A 2012 Election Impact Report for the organization stated that the Federation spent over $7 million in 2012 by influencing over 200 political races across the nation. The most recent IRS 990 form the organization has online is for 2011. In 2011, the Federation raised nationally over $6.7 million.

Wisconsin Election Watch contacted American Federation for Children for comment, but they were not available at the time of publication.
