Buried Treasure Hiding in Port Washington
A scavenger hunt of experiences is the best way to find the hidden wonders of this city.
Have you ever dug for buried treasure?
I remember digging on second base in the school's baseball field, convinced that somehow I would come upon arrowheads. I eyeballed the ads for metal detectors in the back end of Popular Mechanics for years — never buying one.
Years after my family had ceased visiting a particular Michigan beach at which we had a summer home, a huge sunken vessel was discovered in a dune we had played on as children. The lure of potential gems, gold, dubloons, booty — what have you — in specific areas has large appeal.

I am going to drop a tattered treasure map on you for the city of Port Washington. Clues will be given, but its up to you to unravel the nature of the prizes to be found.
- Something stunning: At the end of a long, straight and and narrow walk, take a seat and gaze eastward. Then close your eyes and listen for the full effect.
- The buzz: Early in the a.m., get to the marina and find a bench. Observe who comes and goes — ask questions if any occur.
- Edible loot: Find a place on Grand Avenue that smells like chocolate. Enter to see cases of gleaming gems, each one hand fashioned, each one delectable.
- Looking for Ho: Find a local man named Ho. It is short for HoHo, perhaps. Check in at one of two coffee shops. If they dont know him, you are at the wrong shop. Tell him you have been looking for him and ask him what message he has for you. You will not be dissappointed.
- Diner chrome: Go to on Main and take case because they do not accept Amex here (or any other cards, checks or trades.) Get into the vibe of this diner/cafe with its throwback menu and honest retro appeal. Kick back.
- A small stone house: Find the place on Grand, in the commercial area, walk in and say you need to speak to Dooley. Then ask her, "Where is the treasure in this town?" Get ready for the tour.
We may be short on gold, but we are rich in simple human experiences. Friendly locals, contact with extraordinary natural wonders, good food and good company. But you have to do the leg work — you have to poke around.
