Creating Healthy Versions of Kitchen Staples
Learn to prepare healthy, organic version of kitchen staples like ketchup, mayo and alfredo sauce. Chef and Organic Cooking Coach, KC Thorson will lead a healthy substitutions cooking class on 9/27.

A 2 TBSP. serving of conventional Ketchup contains 8 grams of sugar. The American Heart Association recommends limiting daily intake of sugar to 6 tsp., or 24g., so an extra squirt of ketchup on a hot dog could alone bring one to their daily sugar limit!
Luckily for condiment lovers, enjoying ketchup does not need to be a diet buster. On September 27, KC Thorson, local Chef and Organic Cooking Coach, will be sharing her recipes and tips for healthy versions of household favorites like ketchup, mayo, white and BBQ sauces at a cooking class held at Wellspring Organic Farm near West Bend.
"There are ways to have your Alfredo sauce and eat it too," jokes Thorson. For example, organic coconut milk (a plant fat) makes a fabulous vegetarian/vegan substitute for processed dairy cream and/or half-and-half. Nutritional yeast, a fermented non-active yeast, lends a savory cheesy flavor to sauces and dressings. My goal is to teach folks ways to substitute unhealthy ingredients for organic and healthier whole foods versions.”
