Bird City certification is used to publicly recognize communities that are “bird friendly” by protecting and enhancing the habitat for bird life.
Included in this honor is the ability to post Bird City signs and fly the Bird City logo flag. The logo for Bird City was designed and donated by Ozaukee's own Tom and Mary Uttech, and has become a much loved and respected symbol in the ornithology community.

In order to be considered, the community applied and showed "it successfully met criteria for education, habitat management, species management and limiting or removing hazards to birds" as listed on birdcitywisconsin.org. At least seven out of 22 criteria must be met to qualify for consideration. All criteria promote health conservation practices including legally protected bird habitat, providing information to the public on invasive species identification and removal and community support.
Other recognized communities are Ozaukee County and Mequon. Communities interested in being considered should visit Bird City Wisconsin for criteria details and application.
