Outgoing Yearbook Editor Presents Latest Book

Recent PWHS grad and outgoing yearbook editor Samantha Strook presented this year's book to the School Board on Monday, topping off her second year as editor and fourth year working on the publication.

Even after Sunday's graduation ceremony, Samantha Strook still had one more task to complete: distributing her pride and joy to the Port Washington-Saukville School Board.

Strook, a recent PWHS grad, just completed her second year as editor of the school's yearbook and her fourth year working on the publication. She said the book, with the simple theme "Cherished," "has been like (her) baby all year."

"I wanted this book to be really classic, so when kids look at it years from now, they're not going to say, 'Oh, that was so 2012,'" Strook said as she handed out books during Monday's School Board meeting.

The book has a simple cover, featuring a photo of blooming cherry trees, interrupted only by "Cherished" in a flowy script, and the book's interior is printed entirely in color. Strook said she developed the thematic concept with advisor Katie Feyereisen, a PWHS art teacher.

"Even though it was a lot of work, I will admit I'm going to miss it," Strook said.

Director of Special Services Duane Woelfel noted that of the ten books he has seen at PWHS, this was his personal favorite.

Superintendent Michael Weber agreed, saying that this book will feature prominently among those from the past.

"When you open the door (to see the old books), this one is going to shine," Weber said.

"I was worried it might look too girly, but actually I had a lot of guys come up and say they liked it, so we're good," Strook said. The yearbook was so impressive, it will be used as an example when demonstrating possible design and layout ideas by the book's publishing company.

Strook will go on to study labor and delivery at the University of Wisconsin —Milwaukee Honors College.
