At about 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, Milwaukee police were on patrol in a marked squad car when they saw the stolen Passat traveling in the 4500 block of North Teutonia Avenue, Milwaukee police stated.
According to Lee's criminal complaint, the officers caught up to the Passat near the intersection of Hampton Avenue, where they activated the squad’s lights and siren in an effort to get it to pull over. The Passat ignored these signals and accelerated away from the squad. The squad followed, with lights and siren activated, as the car sped down Hampton at speeds estimated at 60-70 mph.
Police say Lee turned onto Green Bay Avenue and continued speeding, running through four-way stop signs at two different intersections. The Passat continued to gain distance on the squad and eventually turned westbound onto Capitol Drive.
According to his criminal complaint, by the time the Passat reached the 2000 block of Capitol Drive, it was four to five city blocks away from the squad. The driver maneuvered into the parking lane to get around cars that were stopped at the red light on 27th and Capitol.
The Passat also swerved into and out of a gas station parking lot to avoid having to stop on Capitol. The Passat was traveling at speeds estimated at 60-70 mph and continually gained distance on police, the criminal complaint stated.
According to the complaint, police were about three blocks behind the Passat when he saw it run the red light at the intersection of 31st and Capitol, colliding with a car that was turning left in the intersection. The collision caused the Passat to strike a concrete pole, and the Passat was torn in half.
There were two ejected bodies found outside the Passat: the body of Oscar Rash, located near the passenger door, and the body of Antoine Jones, located about 100 feet from the Passat. Rash had no signs of life and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Jones was brought to the hospital, but he also succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, police said.
According to the complaint, the bodies of Jones and Rash were brought to the Medical Examiner for autopsies. Dr. Wieslawa Tlomak, the deputy medical examiner, made findings showing that each victim had suffered multiple blunt- force injuries causing that victim’s death.
Police processed the Passat and found a black Nike shoe for a right foot wedged underneath the gas pedal. Each deceased victim had a right shoe that was not a black Nike, the complaint stated.
Witness Says Lee Was "All Scraped Up"
According to the criminal complaint, police made contact with a family member of Lee, who reportedly came to her residence that evening and stated he was “all scraped up” and wearing a single black Nike shoe on his left foot. He later told her that he had been driving a stolen car and had fled from the police and crashed into another car while attempting to make a turn. He told her that he saw train tracks near the collision scene, and he ran up the tracks to the Rash residence. (There are train tracks right near 31st and Capitol.)
A friend of the family told police that she saw Lee with the two deceased victims shortly before the crash. She was at the Rash house after the crash, and he told her about the crash and admitted that he was driving. He told her the crash was at 31st and Capitol. Lee was identified by both witnesses from an earlier booking photo, according to the complaint.
