HOA Surgeon Provides Medical Expertise at 2012 Summer Olympics

Hinsdale Orthopaedis takes great pride in welcoming home one of its own physicians from the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, which recently took place in London, England.

Doctor Bernard J. Feldman was one of three physicians assigned by FILA, the International Governing Body for Amateur Wrestling, to provide oversight for the provision of medical care and drug test monitoring, to athletes at the wrestling competition venue at the 2012 Olympic Games. In this capacity, Dr. Feldman supervised the medical facilities and support staff provided by the local organizing committee, monitored drug testing programs and provided direct matside medical care to the athletes during the eight days of wrestling competition.

This was the sixth Summer Olympic Games at which Dr. Feldman was chosen to provide medical care to wrestlers; Seoul, Korea in 1988, Barcelona, Spain in 1992, Atlanta, Georgia in 1996, Sydney, Australia in 2000, Beijing, China in 2008 and London, England in 2012. In addition to his commitment to world Olympic programs, he has provided medical expertise as the official wrestling physician for over 130 international wrestling events, including Eighteen Senior World Championships, four Junior World Championships, two Cadet World Championships, five World Cups, two Pan American Games, ten Pan American Championships, one Junior Pan American Championship and one Cadet Pan American Championship. 

In June 2010, Dr. Feldman was inducted into the U.S. National Wrestling Hall of Fame under the Order of Merit. He is the first physician to be inducted based upon his medical contributions. Dr. Feldman has served on the FILA Medical Prevention and Anti-Doping Department since 2001 and was awarded FILA’s Gold and Silver Star Awards, two of the most prestigious awards given by the international wrestling association, for his long-standing commitment and service to the sport of Wrestling.
