SHOREWOOD, WI — Those in Shorewood who previously recieved two shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine may now be eligible for a third booster shot.

Older adults and those with underlying medical conditions are among the first people recommended to get the additional shot, but should you get it? Patch asked the North Shore Health Department just that.

The CDC announced the news this week alongside data supporting the need for a booster shot for people who got the Pfizer vaccine. You would only want to get a booster shot if you meet eligibility criteria, and if Pfizer was the only vaccine you have recieved. Other vaccines such as Johnson & Johnson and Moderna have yet to be approved for booster shots, if they will at all.

CDC studies show immunity against COVID-19 can decrease over time in those who recieved Pfizer, which can make people more susceptible to the delta variant. Vaccination remains effective at preventing severe disease, but a booster shot was proven to increase the immune response, according to the CDC.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services agreed with the CDC study and asserted Wisconsin supports the recommendation to get a booster.

According to Kathleen Platt, an interim health officer for the North Shore Health Department, one of the first things to know is what the difference is between a booster shot and a third dose.

"The booster dose is an additional dose that re-invigorates the immunocompetent person’s response to COVID infection after the anticipated waning of the antibody level," Platt said. "This booster is similar to needing boosters for other routine immunization such as tetanus, mumps, measles, varicella, etc. for maintenance of immunity to disease."

Here's how to get a booster dose in the North Shore:

"We will be administering booster doses, as well as third doses to people who require these vaccines," Platt said. "We currently have Pfizer vaccine and are providing vaccines by appointment only. 414-371-2980."

"We will continue to order vaccinations as long as there is an expressed need from North Shore residents," she said.
