A Rich History in Shorewood
A personal story about the Shorewood community and how it has been a part of my life. As a Realtor, I recommend this community to many of my clients.
The village of Shorewood offers its residents many amenities. As the first suburb north of Milwaukee along Lake Michigan, the village has unique placement. One of Shorewood's features is the beautiful Atwater Beach. Not only known for general relaxation and fun, this is also where the Men's Club holds it's annual chicken dinner picnics and the village puts on its firework display on the 4th of July.
Another local amenity is Hubbard Park. Located east of the Milwaukee River, Hubbard Park hosts community events during the year and their Hubbard Park Lodge is a popular location for Friday fish fries, Sunday brunch, private weddings and a variety of parties. I even had my 8th grade graduation party here.
Beyond some of the outdoor amenities, Shorewood also has a rejuvenated downtown. Here you can find a variety of shops, restaurants and more... all within walking distance.
Possibly one of the best-known Shorewood amenities is the school district. The entire school district is consistently top rated in the state and nation.
For these reason (and more), I am proud to be part of four generations that have lived and learned in Shorewood. This community has helped foster my family to become strong, successful and appreciative people. I am thankful for Shorewood's unique vibrancy and for the opportunities such a community provides to its residents.
Growing up in Shorewood even developed my desire to become a Realtor. As a young girl, my mother would take me to open houses every Sunday. We'd tour local homes, admiring their architecture and green spaces. Today, instead of just admiring the history of these homes, I am a real estate agent who gets to pair by buyers with these homes and the community that comes with them. The fun part about Shorewood is that there is a vast selection of homes to choose from. You can find starter homes, mansions, duplexes, condos and even rentals.
My History in Shorewood
When my grandparents first immigrated to the US, they moved into a lovely home on Downer & Jarvis. There, they raised five children. My mother often spoke of many fond memories of her childhood in that home. Back then, there used to be a trolley car line that would travel past their house. Atwater Beach used to have a concessions building near beach level and people would often fish off the piers. Her brother played football at Shorewood High School and she and her sisters loved going to the local CYO dances.
Years later, my mother raised my sister and I in a home on Lake Bluff. I attended Lake Bluff Elementary. We'd often travel to the other side of Shorewood to visit my grandparents (who still lived in the same house). My sister and I loved walking to Hayek's for 1-cent candies. My kids still don't believe that candy was ever that cheap.
Most recently, my husband and I raised our own daughters is Shorewood. Our daughters went through the entire Shorewood School District and my oldest even had the same kindergarten teacher as I did. Both daughters took their first jobs at local businesses and played a variety of athletics. The urban setting gave them a strong foundation to more forward in the world. Both hope to someday raise their own kids back in Shorewood. That is how much of an impact this community has had on their lives.
Although Shorewood has changed since my grandparents first moved there, the foundations are still the same. If you're looking for a new community to move into, I always recommend Shorewood. Not only to I believe it in, but I also love it!
