Don’t Judge A Book by Its Cover

First appearances make a big impression on the public eye. When a home is on the market for sale, it must be properly prepared to be showcased.

This quote means not to judge what one sees from the outside until you have a chance to view the inside. Still, first appearances make a big impression on the public eye. When a home is on the market for sale, it must be properly prepared to be showcased. Sellers need to treat their home preparations as if they are having a big party for the public.

As a seller, your front door and yard are the very first impression that buyers see. So, make sure that your front door is neatly painted or varnished with nice hardware. If there is any loose paint on the door or trim, have it repaired. Perhaps add a seasonal wreath to give it some added flavor. Also, make sure that the door can open and close with ease. Look at your door as a piece of furniture. Does it look worn or beat-up? If so, fix it.

You should also take note of your landscaping. How does your yard look? Make sure the front gardens are maintained. If the weather is nice enough, place pots of flowers outside of your door to lift the spirits of the viewers as they enter your home. If it is autumn, remember to rake your leaves. If it is winter, make sure the walks and driveway are clear and salted. Also remember to keep your holiday lights up only for the holiday season — no longer.

Next, take note of your windows. Are they nice and clean or foggy with dirt? If they are dirty, either hire a window cleaner or clean the windows yourself. You want to make sure they sparkle inside and out.

Your home’s exterior should also be addressed. Do the brick need tuck pointing? Is the stucco cracked? Is the paint chipping? These are a few items that can deter a potential buyer. If your exterior is in need of updating, make the repairs before allowing potential buyers in.

As a general rule, always make sure to be neat. Keep your car in the garage or on its slab. Keep the yard clear of clutter and toys.

If a buyer is greeted with a polished first impression outside your door, they immediately see a well-maintained home. That is the first impression you want every time as a seller!
