Special Events Keep Shorewood Busy in May

Welcome to a new season in Shorewood, and as the weather heats up, so do the activities.
With plenty of opportunities to recycle unwanted items, take a workshop, attend a flea market, or celebrate Memorial Day at Atwater Park, look no further than Shorewood for all the action. Watch for the new spring issue of Shorewood Today magazine in your mailboxes next week. This expanded, 40-page issue includes a two-page community calendar that lists all village activities and events from May through August. Pick your favorites and mark your calendars right away.

— Sat., May 5: Conservation Fair in the parking lot. Clean out your house, garage and medicine cabinet and put less in a landfill. Drop off batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, corks and old tennis shoes for recycling - plus personal documents for shredding, old electronics and unwanted metals. The DPW will offer recycling bins for sale, and staff will be available to answer questions about waste disposal and recycling. Environmental groups will offer information on conservation issues.
— Tue., May 8: Don't forget to vote in the Primary Recall Election, with all polling locations open 7 a.m.-8 p.m.

— May 11, 12, 17, 18 & 19: "AIDA" Student Edition is presented by the Drama Department at 7:30 p.m. Also staged on May 13 at 2.p.m. - all shows in the Auditorium at Capitol Dr. and Oakland Ave. For residents 60+, pick up a free Senior Pass at the Senior Resource Center or the Recreation Department and you and guest will receive free admission to this show, along with all sports events and the AFS Showcase.
— Fri., May 11 and Sat., May 12: Atwater Elementary School Rummage Sale
Friday 5-8 p.m. and Sat 9 a.m.1 p.m.
— Sat., May 19: Attend the free Rain Garden/Rain Barrel Workshop from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Village Center (lower level of Library). Sponsored by the Shorewood Conservation Committee.
— Sat., May 19: Find a special treasure at the 8th Annual Community Flea Market from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Village Center (lower level of Library) with a bake sale to benefit the Senior Resource Center. Free admission.
— Sat., May 19: Annual bike sale presented by the Shorewood Police Department from 9-11 a.m. First-come, first-served at the Police Garage, 3936 N. Murray Ave.
— Sun., May 27: Enjoy the 13th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Event honoring Shorewood veterans who have served in war and peace. This event at 4 p.m. at Atwater Park includes music and a special program with area dignitaries. A cookout immediately follows at the American Legion Post #331, 4121 N. Wilson Dr.
