Using Religion as A Weapon in Class Warfare

I am not anti-Christian or condemning all Christians for the acts of radicalized Christian extremists. We paint all Muslims with the same brush and fear that they are covert terrorists. We rightfully have to be careful and take the necessary steps to protect ourselves from the assault made by those who would do us harm, common sense tells us that all Muslims aren’t terrorists or all terrorists are Muslim. However, they represent the ‘other’ and because of our ethnocentrism, we are automatically suspect of all who may look different, have different religious beliefs or follow different cultural precepts.

It is easy for us to identify those external things that we find threatening, real or otherwise. But, are we willing to look within and identify those who have become radicalized and are advocating unnecessary change, all in the name of religious ideologies? The radical Muslims use their religion to justify their beliefs and actions; can we not admit that we have those who do the same?

Our system only works as long as we continue to adopt and support secularism as our framework and reference, excluding all singular religious beliefs. Secularism is not devoid of morality, values or ethics. It is based on the concepts of truth, equality, and justice. Secularism doesn’t deny religion, only religious principles or rationality forced on others as it relates to governance and loss or protection of freedoms.

When I view what the fundamentalists are advocating and attempting to force on society, it all comes down to one singular notion; the reestablishment of white majority control. But not just any control, but the romanticized control of white male power of the past, founded on strong protestant Christianity. My thesis is that the white suburban and rural majority is so frightened of change and the minority control of society that they are attempting to invoke a structure in society that would grant them, if not permanent, but long term power.

This includes attempts to restrict voting rights, strict immigration laws, restrictions against the right to peaceful assembly, programs which support the poor, changes in “anchor baby” laws and the list goes on. These actions are all designed to curb the influence of the growing racial and cultural minorities. It is estimated that by 2043, just thirty years from now, white Americans will no longer be in the majority and this is frightening to many white Americans. Many fear reparation, retribution and discrimination as a new minority.  

In the last two national elections, a minority president has been elected largely due to minority voting with the remnant of the old white majority voting solidly against him. It is an indication that power and control is shifting away from the ‘old guard’ and is creating great insecurity in the dwindling previous overwhelming white majority.

The fear of the loss of white male dominance is also motivating the push for ‘states rights’ and the guarantees of the 10^th Amendment. It is a strategy that if the federal government can’t be controlled to guarantee white dominance, then exercising power at the state levels will.

One may ask why religious moral laws of the fundamentalists are so much in play. The answer is quite simple; this is the accepted morality structure and values of the male white majority of the past. It is a means for exercising control on into the future and keeping the white male in control. They are attempting to guarantee their privileged place in the new and emerging class structure. It is rather obvious why there has been a gathering of extreme nationalism and fundamentalist Christianity; they both seek continued white dominance.

Much of society condemns white supremacist groups and what they advocate. However, almost all of these groups are fixated on white power and white dominance, but also extreme nationalism blended with a twist of Christianity as the “White Man’s natural religion”.

The attack on secular progressivism is not a battle between secularism and traditional moral values, but it represents a new class warfare to keep the structure of a white male society in control.
