The company provides DJ services and works at more than 600 weddings every year. Sound by Design also does specialty lighting and rents AV equipment.

Paul Hackbarth purchased the building located at 4042 N. Oakland Avenue in January and is in the process of transforming it into a meeting place for the clients of his disc jockey and lighting services company called “Sound by Design.”
The building on Oakland Avenue is undergoing renovations and will open in two weeks.

“We’ve been doing this since we were 16 years old. We were doing normal gigs when we couldn’t even drive yet,” said Hackbarth, 28.
At age 13, Hackbarth started doing school dances, and worked his way up to create one of Milwaukee’s biggest DJ productions. He and his company do between 600-700 weddings a year.

Hackbarth has 24 employees, who sometimes run events in pairs and in total work up to 12 weddings in a single evening. The warmer weather this time of the year makes makes it a busy time for weddings. With so many events being held on a single day, Hackbarth finds little trouble keeping everything organized.
“Clients can submit their information through our online system where they can create their playlist,” said Hackbarth.
His company also does specialty lighting, corporate events, bar/bat mitzvahs, photo booths and AV rentals.
Sound by Design has received numerous local and national awards. Hackbarth and his company worked inside locations like the Turner Hall Ballroom, Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and Milwaukee War Memorial.
