'Dirty' Shorewood Bank Robber Caught Fleeing Police at 100 MPH

A bank robber in Shorewood fled police in a Volvo at 100 MPH before crashing into a tree and caught hiding under a pile of dirt.

SHOREWOOD, WI — A man who held up the TCF Bank in Shorewood on April 25 fled police in a blue Volvo, reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour on city streets before crashing into a tree, running away, and being discovered hiding under a pile of dirt in someone's back yard.

Our story begins at the TCF bank, located at 4201 North Oakland Ave. in Shorewood on April 25. According to police, a bank teller working behind the counter observed a black male walk into the bank and rapidly approach her window. The man, identified as Markanthony Harris, threw a note down indicating the bank was being robbed.

According to the complaint, the clerk told police she remembered the note said Harris had a gun, and not to put any trackers or dye packs in with the money. The clerk stated that the man began counting backwards from five as she began to remove money from the drawer. She placed the money in a bag provided by Harris.

Harris exited the TCF Bank and walked down Olive Street, leaving the demand note on the counter and running off with $2,363 in cash, police said.

Shorewood police were dispatched at the same time to a suspicious vehicle in the area of Olive Street, described as a dark blue Volvo. As he arrived, a DPW worker pointed out Harris running down Olive Street from the direction of TCF Bank, according to police.

According to police, Harris began running through back yards, only to get into get into a blue four door Volvo waiting on the 4000 block of North Bartlett Avenue

As soon as Harris got into the vehicle, the driver, Melinda Harris, sped away, reaching 65 miles per hour on Olive Street. She then turned north onto Wilson Drive and accelerated to speeds reaching 100 miles per hour, police said.

Police reported losing sight of the Volvo but was quickly notified that there was a crash reported at the corner of Chateau Place and Santa Monica Blvd in the Village of Whitefish Bay. Both suspects fled on foot from the crash scene. Melinda Harris, who was barefoot, was quickly apprehended.

According to his criminal complaint, Markanthony Harris was located approximately 40 minutes later hiding in a backyard partially buried or covered by dirt.

Markanthony Harris has been charged with robbery and bail jumping and faces up to 28 years behind bars. He is being held in the Milwaukee County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond. Melinda Harris has been charged with harboring or aiding a felon and fleeing an officer and faces up to six-and-a-half years behind bars.
