Drunk Wrong-Way Driver Stopped on I-41

Deputies responded to calls reporting a wrong way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes on Highway 41 at Silver Spring.

MILWAUKEE, WI – Wednesday evening, just before 10:00 p.m., deputies responded to calls reporting a wrong way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes on Highway 41 at Silver Spring.

A deputy stopped the driver in the median distress lane just north of W. Hampton Ave. by activating her emergency lights while driving directly at the driver who was then driving at approximately five miles per hour.

Albert J. Payne, age 58, of Milwaukee, performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and tested .09 on a preliminary breath test - greater than the legal limit in Wisconsin.

Payne faces charges of 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Two misdemeanor charges are also being sought: Possession of Cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was cited for DUI-1st offense and Driving Wrong Way on Divided Highway.
