Combining creativity, imagination, and even some dirt, building fairy houses and gnome homes is a great project for boys and girls of all ages and abilities. And with the weather slowly changing, it is a fun way to turn back-yard clean-up into a fun activity.
Since we all know gnomes and garden fairies live outside, it is easy to find supplies to build them a custom home. Simply gather up all the natural materials desired – sticks, leaves, dead-headed flowers, grass, pinecones, stones, etc. In order to best respect the privacy of fairies and gnomes, find a hidden or shaded place to build – unused planters or pots, under hydrangea, or behind a tree are all great sites. Then build away using the natural materials you have found. Remember that fairies and gnomes will need a roof to protect themselves from too much sun or rain. They also will need a place to sleep and a table at which to work, read, and eat. And while they love beautiful items decorating their home, they don’t need a lot of space.

After the home is completed, don’t forget to leave a note and a small refreshment to invite fairies or gnomes to move on in. Wait a few days, and see if anything has changed – it is likely you will soon have a new neighbor!
