Stick to a buying them an older (yet dependable) car. Used cars are cheaper to insure than new ones. Often times carrying just liability can save you even more.

2. Safe Over Sporty

Skip the sexy, sporty model when purchasing your teen a car. They may think its lame now – but it’s the best way to save cash. Sports cars should only be in the hands of experienced drivers and insurance companies know it!

There are plenty of cars that combine coolness and safety, so skip the sporty model and choose sensibly. 3. Get Assigned to a Specific Car

If they are going to be driving one of your cars, ask your insurance company if to assign you to a specific one. Pick mom’s Volkswagen over dad’s Lexus. Luxury cars are more expensive to insure.

4. Take a Driving Course

Lots of insurance companies offer discounts to teens who take (and pass!) an approved driver’s ed course.

5. Getting Good Grades Will Help With Your Teen Car Insurance Rates

Getting a B average (3.0 GPA) or higher will typically score you cheaper teen car insurance rates.

6. Keep it in the Family

In most cases it’s cheaper to get your teen added to your policy than it is to go out and have them get their own. In the state of Wisconsin every licensed driver must carry insurance. So, while you can’t exclude your teens from your policy ~ you could make them buy their own. However it will likely be much more expensive.

7. Go for a Higher Deductible

If you chose this one, make sure you understand the cost vs. the risk. For example; Your used car cost $3,500. If your raise your deductible from $500 to $1,000 and your rates drop by $500 per year (which is possible for a new driver) then after only one year you have recovered the deductible. Anything longer than a year and you are actually making money on a car that is quickly loosing value anyway. Each risk is unique and should be closely evaluated.

8. Don’t be a Statistic

According to the experts, 16 year olds are three times as likely to wind up in a crash than 19 year olds – and almost 6 times higher than 20-24 year olds. No wonder your parents are freaking out.

Stay off your cell phone, wear your seat belt, and ignore that stupid friend that dares you to run the red light for kicks. As a matter of fact ~ don’t let friends ride with you at all for the first few years.

9. Shop Around

Comparing prices will save you a ton of dough. Some insurance companies really really dislike young drivers and raise their rates accordingly. Check out some car insurance rates with a local independent agency like Brew City Insurance. We have several companies that are very good for new drivers.

10. 12-Month Rule

Every 12 months, check in with your insurance company and update your policy information to make sure you are getting the best teen car insurance rates. Keeping a clean driving record after a certain amount of time could get you discounts. Graduating from High School and college could lower premiums too.
