
Shorewood High School junior Martha Hellermann won the stateβs National High School Music Theater Awards female lead competition on Saturday, and will now represent Wisconsin at the organizationβs nation-wide contest, known as the βThe Jimmys,β in New York City this summer.
Hellerman was eligible to compete for the honor after representatives from the Tommy Awards named her a Best Lead in a Musical for her performance in βSpring Awakening.β As part of Hellermannβs all-expense paid trip, she will compete at Minskoff Theatre inTimes Square and will also be eligible for prizes and scholarships at the event.
βThe auditioning process was really intense,β Hellermann said. βThey had us split into groups and we had to do dance numbers and we had to sing individual songsβ¦ but Iβm really happy that I got the award. Iβm nervous, but Iβm excited [to go to New York].β
According to Shorewood Drama Director Joe King, Hellermann deserves the honor and recognition.
βMartha is a talented young actress and singer,β King said. βI am looking forward to watching her compete this summer, and am confident she will have continued success.β
