Shorewood Library Now Offers Radon Test Kits For Check Out

Radon is a silent killer especially prevalent in Wisconsin. The Shorewood Public Library now offers testing kits for the radioactive gas.

SHOREWOOD, WI — Have you ever had your home tested for radon? The naturally occurring radioactive gas seeps into the basements of homes and over time can kill.

In fact, it's the second leading cause of lung cancer in America, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. That's why getting a home tested for radon is one of the biggest suggestions from local health authorities.

To make that easier, the Shorewood Public Library is offering two radon test meters that can be checked out from the library, it said in a Facebook post.

The two radon meters were anonymously donated to the library recently. They can now be checked out for two-three weeks, the library said in its post.

Radon occurs naturally as it sheds from rocks underground. The odorless, invisible gas can seep through even the smallest cracks in one's basement.

Many homebuyers get their home's tested at closing, but others may have lived in a home that hasn't been tested in years.

Head to the Shorewood Public Library, located at 3920 Murray Avenue, or call the library at 414-847-2670 to reserve a testing kit.
