Shorewood Passes 'Civility' Resolution

City officials say the resolution is not an action to becoming a Sanctuary City, which requires passage of an ordinance.

SHOREWOOD, WI — On Monday, July 10, the Shorewood Village Board passed a resolution for justice and dignity. City officials say the resolution is not an action to becoming a Sanctuary City, which requires passage of an ordinance.

The resolution passed by the Village Board on Monday is a values statement to ensure that our community continues to welcome all individuals. The resolution states that "we expressly state we will uphold the law and one of the benefits reminding our community of our values is to encourage collaborative relationships amongst community members and local law enforcement to solve crimes and make our community safer for everyone."

The resolution states further that "the Village of Shorewood does not and will not adopt nor enforce any policy that allows for unlawful discrimination or denial of services or benefits to individuals based upon their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, immigration status, sexual orientation, sexual or gender identity, or disability."

"Furthermore, the Village of Shorewood and its elected and non‐elected officials shall fulfill and comply with their legal duties under applicable Immigration and Custom Enforcement law."

The resolution continues, "the Shorewood Police Department is committed to providing law enforcement services to the community without regard to the racial, cultural or other differences of those served. It is the policy of this department to provide law enforcement services and to enforce the law equally and fairly without discrimination toward any individual or group."
