Shorewood Signs Onto National Gun Safety Campaign
Officials in Shorewood unanimously approved supporting a national gun safety campaign.

SHOREWOOD, WI — Officials in Shorewood unanimously approved supporting a national gun safety campaign less than a week after 17 people were shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The campaign is called the Do Not Stand Idly By campaign. Their stated goals are to:
- Significantly reduce the number of firearms-related deaths, injuries and crimes in America.
- Safeguard the ability of law-abiding Americans to own firearms for personal use.
- Modernize and stabilize the U.S. gun industry.
According to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report, the Village of Shorewood has added its name to an information request for major gun manufacturers. The request is for "specific information on the companies' safety technologies and distribution practices."

The resolution also calls for the village to test and evaluate "smart guns" and other safety tools.
According to the National Rifle Association, the group doesn't necessarily oppose smart gun technology in general, however it “opposes any law prohibiting Americans from acquiring or possessing firearms that don’t possess ‘smart’ gun technology,” according to its Institute for Legislative Action website.
