The store's previous owners also sold tobacco and vape products.

What may have seemed like a routine request was met with some hesitance from Trustee Arthur Ircink and Trustee Tammy Bockhorst.

Ircink spoke first, stating he opposes new tobacco and would like to abstain or vote no for the business. Bockhorst shared similar words in the meeting, and said she would also vote no or abstain.

Trustee Wesley Warren responded to the statements from Bockhorst and Ircink. Warren said he would not want to apply an arbitrary standard, but made it clear he is not in favor of tobacco.

The tobacco license passed with four ayes, zero nays and two abstaining.

Atwater Beach Festival Approved

The Village Board of Trustees approved a permit for the "FAB Beach Bash 2021," submitted by the Friends of Atwater Beach.

The festival could feature yoga, a DJ, sandcastle competition, beach Olympic Games and a raffle, according to the itinerary submitted to the village. The festival would take over parts of Atwater Beach from 9a.m.-2 p.m. on August 28.

DJ Fuzzy Logic will provide music at the event throughout most of the day. The sandcastle competition will start around 11 a.m., according to the submitted itinerary.

The "Beach Olympic Games" will feature bag toss, limbo and hula hoops, according to the submitted itinerary.

Discussion On Police Commission Continues

The Committee of the Whole also met Monday to listen to a presentation from Attorney Steven Zack on "The Roles, Duties and Jurisdiction of Police and Fire Commissions."

The presentation was requested by the Village Board as the Shorewood Public Safety Committee continues work on processing the 2020 police organizational study, commonly known as the Weiss report, according to a Village Manager Rebecca Ewald's newsletter.

One member of the commission, Chuck Carlson, spoke to Patch before the meeting about possible structural improvements.
