Hamilton School District: Hamilton's AP Scores Remain Strong

Despite the school year being interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Hamilton High School Advanced Placement (AP) results remained well above state and national averages.

Some 88.5% of Hamilton students who took the exams in 2021 received a score of 3 or higher on AP exams, which earn them credits that are recognized by many colleges and universities. The results are from the 2020-21 school year when 373 Hamilton students took AP classes and 330 had scores of 3 or higher on the exams. In contrast, only 26% of Wisconsin students and 24.4% of students nationally had scores of 3 or higher.

Hamilton offers AP classes in biology, calculus, chemistry, computer science, English literature and language, environmental science, human geography, macroeconomics, microeconomics, music theory, physics, psychology, statistics, studio art, U.S. history and comparative and U.S. government.

“I commend our dedicated faculty, our motivated students, and our supportive families,” Hamilton High School Principal Rebecca Newcomer said. “It takes a committed team to achieve at such high levels and I am proud of their accomplishments.”

AP curriculum exposes students to a high level of rigor that challenges student thinking and prepares them for a variety of experiences and opportunities after high school.

“AP courses should not be viewed as courses for only those students who intend on pursuing a 4-year degree,” Newcomer noted. “Hamilton’s pass rate is absolutely noteworthy and something we will need to work to maintain. Raising our participation rate and creating more access for all students is another goal for the upcoming years.”
