Piggly Wiggly Expansion Linked to Downtown Redevelopment

New or expanded store viewed as "critical" for redeveloped downtown area.

Plans to expand the village's downtown Piggly Wiggly store remain on the table, but a decision on how to proceed likely is at least a year away, officials say.

Gary Suokko, chief operating officer of Piggly Wiggly Midwest, said plans under consideration range from a remodel to replacement of the building housing the store.  The possible expansion, he said, still is in the planning process and a decision isn't likely in the near future.

“It’s going to be a long time before a decision is made on that sort of thing,” he said. “It could be a replacement or an addition to the store, or a remodel of the store, but one way or the other, it’s still just in the planning process.”

Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said Piggly Wiggly hasn’t given officials any indication of what their future plans will entail other than a new or expanded store, but the new building will be a “critical” aspect of the new downtown area.

“At one point, we would have wanted it done tomorrow,” he said. “But in all honesty, I don’t think anything is going to happen until next year’s construction season, so, with timing, I wouldn’t anticipate anything until next year.”
