Sussex Woman Charged with Bilking Bank out of $38,000

A 46-year-old Sussex woman was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Wednesday for allegedly bilking Waukesha State Bank out of $38,136.

Robin L. Holtman was charged with one count of fraud against a financial institution for making a false deposit of $40,000 into a bank account and withdrawing most of it in a cashier’s check. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

On March 25, Holtman went to the Sussex location of and deposited a personal check for $40,000 from a checking account she had with another institution. The account had first been opened with Waukesha State Bank on March 8.

On March 29, Holtman went back to the bank and got a cashier’s check worth $37,807 withdrawn from the account to go to The Windows Store. However, after the check was drafted, bank officials noticed there were insufficient funds in the account.

When confronted by investigators about the withdrawal, Holtman told them she had deposited the $40,000 using the wrong bank account and it was an accident. Investigators looked into her claim, but discovered neither of the accounts in question had close to $40,000 in them.

Holtman also made ATM withdrawals from the Waukesha State Bank account, which brought the total amount taken from the bank to $38,136.
