Village Abolishes Beautification Committee

The Sussex Village Board voted 5-1 Tuesday night to disband the Beautification Committee due to an upcoming, extensive Main Street construction project.

As expected, the Sussex Village Board formally disbanded its Beautification Committee on Tuesday night.  The final vote was 5-1, with one board member absent. Board members had previously decided that the committee should be eliminated due to plans for an extensive infrastructure and road construction project along Main Street over the next couple of years.

On Feb. 22, the board directed its staff to prepare a motion to drop the committee.

Since Main Street will be torn up for an extended period of time, board members decided not to pour any additional financial resources into beautification efforts until the construction project is finished.

Established in 2005, the committee’s primary responsibilities were to plant and maintain flowers along Main Street and host an annual picnic. Although the board took no further action on the matter, the door has been left open to form a new committee once the construction project is completed.

A new Beautification Committee would have broader responsibilities with a variety of quality of life issues in the village, including beautification, the annual picnic and other aesthetic concerns such as walking paths and bike paths. The committee would also serve as a sounding board for residents who have other concerns.
