Village Hall Study Group Shows Strong Interest in New Facility on Current Campus

Committee narrows possible locations for new village hall to four options for further study.

The Sussex Study Group has a strong interest in building a new government facility on the current village hall campus.

After going through a rating of 14 potential properties in key requirements in the future village hall, the group Wednesday chose a new building on the current property as its top choice, followed by a remodel of the current building and a third choice of putting the new seat of Sussex government at the .

A fourth option chosen by the group would put the new village hall at the current community center.

Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said staff will now examine the pros and cons of each possible plan  and present them to the group at its June meeting to narrow the options further.

Committee members examined the 14 possible properties and rated them based on redevelopment impact, space needs, options for developing a campus setting, accessibility and transportation, historical sensitivity, ability to consolidate village departments in one building, ascetics, and tax impact.

The option of building a new facility on the current campus was the top choice in each category except for tax impact, ascetics, and historic sensitivity.

The current village hall was built in the 1920s and was last remodeled about 20 years ago. Leaders will examine if the building should be replaced or remodeled in the next seven to 10 years.
