The production of KidsWrites: GrowUp! evolved from a series of 15 creative writing workshops held at 13 area grade schools by Tom New, English teacher at Catholic Memorial High School.

“In the workshops, students were given a general topic,
growing up and grown-ups, and told not to worry about grammar, spelling, or the “rules” of writing; they could just let the ideas flow freely and quickly,” said Tom.
After each workshop, Tom read everything the children wrote, and selected the best, funniest, and most moving responses, and crafted them into a script. As such, there is no traditional plot line, with a beginning, middle, and end.

The student authors’ words are preserved exactly as they
were written. What the audience will be seeing is a series of responses to writing prompts grouped around some general ideas. The lyrics for the songs also came from the children, with the music written by CMH graduates and current students.
