Local Doctor to be Awarded with the Distinguished Eagle Scout

The Potawatomi Area Council, Boy Scouts of America has been granted the opportunity to honor Dr. Joseph Schmidt as the 2017 Distinguished Eagle Scout. Dr. Schmidt will be presented the award on Wednesday, September 20, at The Legend at Brandybrook. The Distinguished Eagle Scout Award was established in 1969 to acknowledge Eagle Scouts who have received extraordinary national-level recognition, fame, or eminence within their field, and have a strong record of voluntary service to their community. Only Eagle Scouts who earned the Eagle Scout rank a minimum of 25 years previously are eligible for nomination. The award is given by the National Eagle Scout Association upon the recommendation of a committee of Distinguished Eagle Scouts. To this day, only a few of Waukesha Area Eagle Scouts have been selected to receive this prestigious award.

Dr. Schmidt has made Scouting an integral component of his life; both personally and professionally. Led by his father, Eagle Scout, Fredrick N. Schmidt and followed, most recently, by his son, Eagle Scout, Nicolas J. Schmidt. Dr. Schmidt is the fifth of twelve Eagle Scouts in his family. He achieved the rank in 1980 in Troop 29 of Mukwonago, WI.

Due to the dedication and drive he developed through Scouting, Dr. Schmidt began to pursue his dream in dentistry. He attended Carroll College for undergraduate studies and Marquette University’s School of Dentistry. He graduated in 1988. Dr. Schmidt completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Denver General Hospital of Denver, Colorado. In 1991, Dr. Schmidt received his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and joined Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of Waukesha.

During his time in Denver, Dr. Schmidt developed his passion for dental implants, and through, over 25 years in practice, has become a leader in the field of Dental Implantology. He has reached this pinnacle in his career through numerous engagements with organizations, whose goal is to improve this field, and has lectured on dental implants throughout the United States. Dr. Schmidt was involved with international implant research as an ambassador for the Astra Tech Incorporated OsseoSpeed Implant Trials, he served as a committee member and chairperson for the Scientific Committee for the Astra Tech World Congress, and was a member of the Standard of Care and Membership committee for the Academy of Osseointegration.

Dr. Schmidt credits much of who he is today to the time he had spent in Scouting. Understanding the value Scouting added to his life, he wanted his son, Nic, and others in his community to share these experiences. While studying at Carroll College, he served as Assistant Scoutmaster and earned his Oakleaf. Dr. Schmidt served as Cubmaster to Pack 231 of Genesee Depot and Committee Member to Troop 49 of Summit. In 2014, he earned the Silver Beaver Award and currently serves as the Potawatomi Area Council Board President.

Currently living in Lake Country, Dr. Schmidt and his wife, Julie, enjoy spending time with their son and daughter, Nicolas and Angela. They enjoy spending their free time in the great outdoors of Northern Wisconsin and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
