Police Identify Homicide Suspect Fatally Shot by MPD; Also Identify Victim

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are identifying the deceased, after police shot and killed a homicide suspect overnight Saturday after police said the suspect returned to the scene and charged officers while brandishing a knife.

Police identified the homicide victim, the suspect, whom Milwaukee Police shot and killed after he reportedly charged officers with a knife, and have also the ages and service time of the officers who shot the suspect.

Victim Identified:

The victim in the July 23 homicide in the 2500 block of N. 5th Street is identified as Willie B. Williams (B/M, 10/7/1951).

Suspect Identified:

The homicide suspect shot and killed by Milwaukee Police is identified as Austin J. Howard (B/M, 9/22/1966).

Officers involved in fatally shooting Howard:
The Milwaukee Police Officers involved in the shooting are a 34-year-old male with one year of service, a 32-year-old male with nine years of service, a 29-year-old with three years of service, and a 29-year-old male with ten years of service. All of the officers are assigned to District Five and remain on administrative leave per standard procedure.

The Incident

Police responded to the 2500 block of N. 5th St. just before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday to investigate an apparent stabbing case.
The victim, a 64-year old Milwaukee man, was stabbed by the suspect, a 49-year old Milwaukee man. The suspect fled the area and the victim died from stab wounds while being transported by Milwaukee Fire Department to the hospital.

As the investigation continued, the suspect returned to the scene around 2:15 a.m. and charged at officers, outside of a residence, while holding a knife. Multiple officers discharged their firearms striking and fatally wounding the suspect. A knife was recovered next to the suspect.

The suspect has an arrest record with the Milwaukee Police Department, is a convicted felon, and is on probation for strangulation.
Officers involved will be placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure. The Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation will be investigating the officers’ use of force.
