School District of New Berlin’s Career Days Connects All Secondary Students With Professionals in Various Industries, Careers

The School District of New Berlin annually provides all secondary students with exposure to a variety of careers and the education opportunities available to them after high school through a number of special events. The most recent event in the annual SDNB College and Career Event Series was Career Days – Nov. 29 at New Berlin Eisenhower Middle/High School and Dec. 1 at New Berlin West Middle/High School.
Career Days features more than 65 professionals from many different industries and careers within those industries. The volunteer speakers spend their afternoon engaging with classrooms of students about their professions, how they chose their career, what education was required and much more.
"We consider it a priority for all students to be exposed to a variety of industries and careers during their time in our district so that they can see the relevance of what they are learning to their personal, academic, social, and career goals,” Superintendent Joe Garza said.

Volunteer presenters included a veterinarian, mechanical engineer, radiation therapist, social worker, small business entrepreneur, auto mechanic, chiropractor, athletic trainer, truck driver, FBI agent and a robotics engineer, to name just a few.
All secondary students attended three sessions. The sessions are either aligned with a student’s academic and career plan, or will help shape their plan for future years.

Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, a long-standing partner of the SDNB, helps coordinate the event.
“We could not hold Career Days in our district without the help of Junior Achievement, and without the support of all the volunteers who share their time, knowledge and experience with our students,” Garza said. “Our sincerest thanks and gratitude go out to all those who made this year’s event another success.”
Career Days is just one of several events in the annual SDNB College and Career Event Series. Other events include the Wisconsin Education Fair and Industry Tours, which give students the opportunity to go off-campus to learn about industries such as manufacturing and engineering, health science and information technology/computer science.
