Silver Lake Seventh Grader Wins Junior American Citizens Contest

Oconomowoc Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was pleased to award first place honors

Oconomowoc, WI – The Oconomowoc Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was pleased to award first place honors to Kira Schauer (left) for her short story entered in the Junior American Citizens contest. Kira, a seventh-grade student at Silver Lake Intermediate School in Oconomowoc, also received first place honors in the state of Wisconsin. Presenting the award is Mary Hedgcock, JAC chair for the Oconomowoc chapter.

This contest is sponsored by the DAR annually. This year the theme was “100th Anniversary of World War I—Service on the Homefront”. Contests are held in the categories of Art (poster, banner, stamp, or photographic essay), Creative Expression (poetry or short story), and Community Service.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With nearly 185,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world's largest and most active service organizations. DAR members are committed to volunteer service having served more than 12.5 million hours in communities throughout the world during the past three years.
