'Think Pink' Night a Total Success for Blackshirts

Money raised for Breast Cancer Awareness research and basketball team gets a big win 53-37 over Catholic Memorial.

Friday night’s β€œThink Pink” basketball game at is just the latest success in a series of community service projects that Blackshirt teams have been participated in.

β€œWaukesha South has taken on a mission for each of its sports team to participate in a community service project during the 2010-11 season," states a news release from South Athletic Director Dan Domach.

The winter sports season has given South’s teams plenty of opportunities to show their appreciation for the local community. The boys basketball teams volunteered at a youth basketball tournament hosted at South.

The wrestling team was extremely active. They volunteered at Linden Heights, worked as members of the scare crew at Lapham Peak’s Fright Hike and also sent care packages of coffee to troops in Afghanistan.

The boys swim team will get involved in the action next on April 16 when they are involved in the Special Olympics District Swim Meet in Oconomowoc, but Friday night was the girls basketball teams turn.

Although it was South’s β€œThink Pink” night, the lady Crusaders and their fans joined in to make the night a great success.

The players on both teams wore pink warm-up shirts before the game. The coaches and trainers on both sides joined the fun as well, showing off their best pink ties, sweaters and collared shirts. Not to be left out, South and Memorial fans created a sea of pink in the stands with their bright, colorful clothing.

The night featured a silent auction with many great items up for bid including: an Aaron Rodgers signed picture, a Tramon Williams signed picture, a Kindle and gift card, a free night stay at The Clarke Hotel and much more. South also hosted a raffle with a YMCA Family Membership, multiple gift certificates and even more great prizes.

To top it all off, the main event of the night featured a Classic 8 Conference showdown between rivals Waukesha South and Catholic Memorial.

The Blackshirts did not disappoint the energetic home crowd as junior Eileen Van Horn and senior Katy Allen put on an offensive display to lead South to a 53-37 victory.

Allen led all scorers with 18 points and played a terrific all-around game, working hard on the backboard to secure rebounds. Van Horn added 15 points including two three-pointers.

The Blackshirts jumped out to a 16-5 lead at the end of one quarter of play. The Crusaders tried to battled back at the start of both the second and third quarters closing the gap to as little as four points.

However the Blackshirts were able to tighten up on defense and answer every Memorial run with a run of their own. Sophomore Lexi Weitzer played a big part on defense blocking four shots.

Memorial was led offensively by junior Abby Radish with 12 points and junior Katie Mueller who added 11 points.
