Even now, as he reaches his eighth decade, with a lifetime of accolades and a seminal body of music behind him, Robin Trower is still chasing the biggest high he knows. It always starts the same way, with a road-scuffed Fender Stratocaster and a revved-up Marshall amplifier, those skilful fingers exploring the fretboard until a riff sticks and a new song ignites. And from the cultural flashpoint of Sixties London with Procol Harum, through 1974’s stadium-filling Bridge Of Sighs, right up to this year’s acclaimed Come And Find Me, it’s these addictive moments of creation that have kept the guitarist vital, relevant and contemporary while his peers trade on past glories.
“Some people say I’m driven, but I think it’s just the love of doing it,” reflects Trower of a multi-million-selling solo catalogue fast approaching thirty releases (and that’s before you compute his collaborations with everyone from Jack Bruce to Bryan Ferry). “I play guitar every day and just through messing around, ideas happen. I can never feel the songs coming. But all of a sudden, you get a sliver of an idea and you think, ‘Oh, what’s this…?’”
Right now, Trower stands on the cusp of a whirlwind year that will see him put down heavy miles across America and the UK (“I’m chomping at the bit, because I had to cancel a US tour last year due to an operation”). At the grand vintage of 80, however, this latest tour represents a mere stretch of the long road travelled. In his mind’s eye, Trower can still see his Southend-on-Sea childhood in the ’50s, and feel the formative influence of guitar players from across the water. “Rock ‘n’ roll,” he says, “was my first love. I’m still drawing on that first love for Come And Find Me.”
When he reaches right back, Trower’s earliest memory of that rebel movement is hearing Elvis sideman Scotty Moore (“He probably had the best sound of any rock ‘n’ roll player at the time”). Next came a life-changing spin of a friend’s imported single, which happened to be B.B. King’s 3 O’ Clock Blues (“I just remember hearing the bends and vibrato and thinking, ‘How the hell is he doing that?’”). Albert King’s Crosscut Saw, Jimi Hendrix’s Machine Gun, James Brown’s Live At The Apollo: all of them informed Trower’s musical personality as he made his first moves in 1959 with R&B hopefuls The Paramounts.
The big time beckoned in 1967 when Trower joined A Whiter Shade Of Pale hitmakers Procol Harum, and many guitarists would have clung to that enviable position for life. Trower acknowledges his good fortune at being at the epicentre of that late-’60s youthquake (“I still think it was the epitome of UK popular music and rock ‘n’ roll”). But Procol’s band dynamic could never contain all his ideas, and after five acclaimed albums, Trower rolled the dice on a solo career. “It was something I had to do,” he told Classic Rock. “But it could have all gone awry.”
Needless to say, the history books have vindicated him. By 1974, Trower was a major star in the land whose music had inspired him, with Bridge Of Sighs’ heavy soul achieving Gold US sales and influencing future luminaries like Steve Lukather, Metallica and countless more. “When I hear Bridge Of Sighs, it’s like the earth under my feet is moving,” the highly rated Canadian bluesman Philip Sayce told Guitarist in 2024. “It’s like a chest is heaving.”
Trower himself is still proud of that deathless record (“I recognise the potency, especially with Jimmy Dewar’s fantastic vocals”). Yet the veteran doesn’t dine out on Bridge Of Sighs – or his other hit albums of the late-’70s like For Earth Below, Long Misty Days and In City Dreams – preferring to march ever onward. Stick a pin in his catalogue over the past decade alone and you’ll find projects from 2020’s United State Of Mind supergroup alongside Maxi Priest to the pairing with New York vocalist Sari Schorr on 2023’s Joyful Sky. “She’s dynamite,” he says of the latter, “and I’ll Be Moving On is a particular favourite of mine from that album.”
Tracked last year during four separate sessions at Newbury’s Studio 91 (the setting for all Trower’s recent solo albums), the genesis of Come And Find Me speaks volumes about the guitarist’s late-period momentum and high standards. “Here’s the thing, I had enough material for two albums,” he reflects. “I must have recorded 18 songs, all finished. I honed that down to ten songs, but when I listened back to the album again a few months later, it didn’t quite hang together. So I recorded some new songs, knocked others off the previous running order. A lot of work went into Come And Find Me – but it really does hang together well now.”

Don’t say The Midnight didn’t warn you. After teasing fans on social media with ominous imagery, snippets of lush keyboard washes, and cryptic references to classic science fiction stories, the band that emerged over a decade ago out of Los Angeles returns with Syndicate, their fifth studio album (not even counting the three EPs released between) and their most ambitious and outward-looking work yet. Syndicate evolves The Midnight’s simultaneously retro and forward-looking sound while cementing the band’s status as perhaps the most musically and lyrically ambitious act to come out of the burgeoning synthwave scene.
With four singles already released from the 17-track album (“Shadowverse,” “Digital Dreams,” “Chariot,” and “Love is an Ocean,”) the listener can already get a sense of the wider canvas the band is painting with. “This is our ‘making peace with the apocalypse’ record,” says singer and lyricist Tyler Lyle.
And while Syndicate’s lyrics embrace the unsettled, sometimes paranoid side of the 1980s (few reminisces of the period focus on how preoccupied by nuclear war the eighties were) Lyle’s creative partner Tim McEwan brings undertones of anxiety and even doom to the lush synth washes and hooky yet unexpected chord progressions that fans of The Midnight have come to know and love.
The band was born in spring 2012 from the fortuitous meeting of two very different musical sensibilities. Atlanta-born Lyle emerged from the folk-inflected Georgia music scene that grew up around the legendary Eddie’s Attic live music venue. “I came to LA thinking I was gonna be the next Mumford and Sons,” Lyle laughs, recalling how he was put together with Danish songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tim McEwan in what he calls “a songwriters’ blind date.”
The two quickly discovered the overlap of their creative Venn diagram lay in the moody, synthesizer-driven sound that exploded in popularity in the wake of the cult thriller Drive and especially its enormously influential retro-1980s inspired soundtrack. But the new musical direction required a lot of adjustment from both men. “Up until then I’d been moving in more traditional pop circles,” recalls McEwan, “and I really had to unlearn those tendencies.”
For McEwan, this meant embracing his inner maximalist, using the maxim “If it feels like it’s over the top…add more!”
And for Lyle, it meant moving away from narrative-driven lyrics and toward songs that relied more on imagery and pure mood. “I decided at some point that I’m not gonna tell a story,” says Lyle, “Instead, I’m gonna describe what the scenery is.”
The result is a listening experience that evokes in the listener Proustian sense memories of first loves and afternoons on the couch playing 8-bit video games while simultaneously feeling downright cinematic. In a genre sometimes derided for trafficking in easy nostalgia, The Midnight eschews putting air quotes around the DX7 solo of a 1980s radio hit in favor of washing over listeners and making them feel like they’re standing on a rainy street under neon inside a Michael Mann or a Tony Scott movie.
“I got into (mythologist and Hero With a Thousand Faces author) Joseph Campbell and (Swiss psychotherapist and author) Carl Jung in a big way and realized at some point that instead of just being a synth pop band we were building an entire world with all of these archetypes,” says Lyle. “We realized we were playing with the imagery of the ‘80s, but in the same way Springsteen did with midcentury America and factory work and such. That’s when it really became fun.”
Also notable in a scene more known for studio experimentation, The Midnight quickly emerged as an exciting live rock and roll band with a big and devoted young audience that grew completely outside the major label/radio airplay apparatus, scoring three number one singles on Billboard’s electronic music chart, playing major festivals, selling out massive headline tours, and co-headlining a 2024 run with Chromeo. “That always trips me out,” says McEwan. “When we first started playing live, I wondered who was gonna show up. Was it just going to be people over 35?”
But the burdens of building and sustaining that audience outside the corporate mainstream took their toll. McEwan recently withdrew from touring to focus on songwriting and studio work, while Lyle dealt with a family health crisis that sent his muse on a voyage into bleak and sunless lands. “I was spending a lot of time in doctors’ offices, and thinking about the larger world and are we living in the end of times?” Recalls Lyle. “But the truth is, all eight billion of our individual worlds will end — for each of us the apocalypse always comes.”

Few Bands in the history of Rock N’ Roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this Band has had on the world. From the very beginning, in the small venues of Los Angeles California, and later to the numerous countries worldwide that banned these Winged Assassins from performing live, the Band’s unique style of Shock and Rock caused Religious organizations, Local City Councils, Parliaments, and the Washington D.C. Senate to hold hearings in an effort to bar this group from selling records and trashing stages everywhere they played. The band’s founding member, frontman Blackie Lawless, has led the group as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold out shows across the globe for 4 decades.

In this life, very few friendships withstand the test of time. Naturally, people go their separate ways and chase their own dreams. As rare as it may be for friendships to last a lifetime, it might be even rarer for a band to stick together for the long haul. For close to four decades, the members of Big Head Todd and The Monsters—Todd Park Mohr [vocals, guitar, keys, sax, harmonica], Brian Nevin [drums], Rob Squires [bass, vocals], and Jeremy Lawton [keyboards, lap pedal/steel guitar, vocals]—have continued to both throw down in the studio and light up stages worldwide. Rallying around a core vision, the platinum-selling Colorado quartet kick out the kind of blues-drenched rock ‘n’ roll bangers that make you want to rev the engine a little louder, sing along like no one’s looking, and live a little freer.
This holds true on their 12th full-length offering, Her Way Out.
“To me, my band means four people who listen to each other, work hard, and share a goal,” Todd observes. “The goal has to do with reaching out to people, catching their ears, and sharing a story we hope they relate to. Our fans have given us an incredible 40-year career, and we hope they’ve gotten great songs and performances in return.”
They’ve most definitely delivered on both fronts…
As the story goes, Todd, Brian, and Rob unlocked their musical partnership during high school when they started jamming in the early eighties. Fast forward to 1986, they adopted the moniker Big Head Todd and The Monsters. BHTM released 2 successful independent records on their own BIG Records, Another Mayberry (1989) and Midnight Radio (1990) before drawing the attention of music industry titans and signing with Irving Azoff, Chuck Morris, and Frank Barsalona in 1992. They broke nationally with the platinum-certified staple Sister Sweetly (1993) which yielded four top 10 rock radio hits. They continued to progress with Strategem [1994] and Beautiful World [1997] which yielded several more rock radio hits including Boom Boom featuring John Lee Hooker. The band is continually touring and recording and has continued to put out albums that have received critical acclaim from both fans and press.
Among other milestones, their music literally reached the heavens when they played “Blue Sky” live at NASA Mission Control, delivering a celestial wakeup for astronauts aboard the International Space Station. They’ve toured and recorded with many rock and blues legends including B.B. King, Neil Young, The Allman Brothers, Hubert Sumlin, David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Dave Matthews Band, The Eagles and their personal favorite Robert Plant. Not to mention, they attained hometown hero status by headlining Red Rocks Amphitheatre 35 times in addition to earning induction into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2023.
Her Way Out came to life organically. For two years, they hosted “Monster’s Music Monthly,” serving up either a new song or a new version of a classic online. Working out of Jeremy’s home studio, they parlayed this momentum into their latest LP.
“It had been almost seven years since our last album release, but we wanted to put the same energy of ‘Monster’s Music Monthly’ into a full-length,” Todd notes. “We have a very distinct personality as a band. I write to the sensibilities of each member, because they’re going to have to dig playing it. We’re a benevolent democracy. If one guy isn’t connecting with a certain song, that song is out. As an uncomplicated rock band, we like to do things that are ‘proper’—loud guitars, drums, big bass, and well-placed organ, keys, and lap steel. We road-tested every song on the record before recording a lick. All of that helped us dial in the arrangements, ditch tunes that didn’t work, and grow a strong sense of what our individual parts should be.”View Tickets & More Info

16 studio albums, and over 15 million records sold, Indigo Girls continue to blaze the trail for generations of Queer artists in the mainstream. The Grammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray began their career in clubs and bars around their native Atlanta, GA amidst a blossoming alternative music scene before signing to Epic Records in 1988. Indigo Girls’ eponymous major label debut sold over two million copies under the power of singles “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears” and introduced the duo’s signature harmonies and powerful, sophisticated songs to a dedicated, enduring global audience.
Indigo Girls was the first of six consecutive Gold and/or Platinum-certified albums. On their latest record, the Indigo Girls tell their origin story. 2020’s Look Long, is stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers chronicling their personal upbringings with more specificity and focus than they have on any previous song-cycle. These eleven songs have a tender, revealing motion to them, as if they’re feeding into a Super 8 film projector, illuminating a darkened living room. “We’re fallible creatures shaped by the physics of life,” says Saliers. “We’re shaped by our past; what makes us who we are? And why?” The two songwriters are tackling the mechanisms of perspective. In this moment of delirious upheaval, Look Long considers the tremendous potential of ordinary life and suggests the possibility that an honest survey of one’s past and present, unburdened by judgement, can give shape to something new—the promise of a way forward. With the energy of an expanding, loyal audience beneath their feet, a weather eye toward refinement, and an openness to redefinition, Indigo Girls exemplify that promise.“We joke about being old, but what is old when it comes to music? We’re still a bar band at heart,” says Saliers. “While our lyrics and writing approach may change, our passion for music feels the same as it did when we were 25 years old.”
Committed and uncompromising activists, Saliers and Ray work on issues like racial justice and reproductive rights (Project Say Something), immigration reform (El Refugio), LGBTQ advocacy, education (Imagination Library), death penalty reform, and Native American rights, (First Peoples Fund).
“As time has gone on, our audience has become more expansive and diverse, giving me a sense of joy,” remarks Saliers. Recently, “Closer to Fine” featured prominently in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster film Barbie and introduced Indigo Girls’ music to a new generation of listeners. Released in 2024, their critically-acclaimed documentary Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All (directed by Alexandria Bombach) blends 40 years of home movies, raw film archive, and intimate present-day verité into a heartfelt career retrospective. A New York Times Critic’s Pick, the documentary premiered opening night at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023 and went on to screen at SXSW, Tribeca Film Festival, and Hot Docs before releasing to Netflix.
While Rolling Stone describes them as “ideal duet partners,” Indigo Girls’ live performances aren’t so much duets as they are community experiences—massive group singalongs together with their audience. To hear those collective singing voices raise into one and overpower even the band itself, one realizes the importance Indigo Girls’ music has in this moment. In an increasingly-terrifying present, we are all in search of a daily refuge, a stolen hour or two, when we engage with something that brings us joy, perspective, or maybe just a sense of peace. As one bar band once put it, “We go to the doctor, we go to the mountains...we go to the Bible, we go through the work out.” For millions, they go to the Indigo Girls: a creative partnership certain of its bearings, forging a way forward.View Tickets & More Info

Sylvan Esso announce their first new album in four years, and their first to be released on their own, on their own record label. Arriving September 11th via Psychic Hotline, Ow ∞ is a trust fall into our dystopian present, past and future: arms wide open, embracing and absorbing the pain of cities under water or on fire, and piecing oneself back together as a tactile, scotch-taped collage of memories, ephemera, Y2K-era burned CDs and backseat makeouts. Produced by Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, Ow ∞ is also the longest the band has ever spent writing a record, yet it arrives with an intense immediacy that is messy, hellish and free, metabolizing a life of making music with people into making art that you just love.View Tickets & More Info

IAN SWEET Shiverstruck Polyvinyl Record Co.
IAN SWEET is the chosen shape Jilian Medford often steps into—and sometimes dissolves inside of. What began 10 years ago as a solo project that launched her to indie-critical-darling status, over time has evolved into something more atmospheric and less containable: a porous altar, a mirror, a weather system. There are stretches when the line between Jilian and “IAN SWEET” disappears entirely—this time around a very real life trifecta of battling industry pressures, the ending of a 3-year relationship, and a return to living in her native city of Los Angeles. These serve as the backdrop under which Shiverstruck, her fifth album as IAN SWEET, has found its way into the world. Shiverstruck arrives from a place of deliberate separation. Where earlier works collapsed the distance between Jilian and IAN SWEET, this record gently reestablishes it. The writing process became an act of surrender and an intentional relinquishing of control. “I was thinking about how easy it is to mistake survival for connection,” Medford explains about Shiverstruck album opener “987.” “Music has pushed me to be more empathetic, to pay attention to emotions and experiences that aren’t always comfortable, and channel that into something that feels authentic.” Rather than meticulously sculpting every emotion, she allowed the songs to assume their own architecture. In doing so, she discovered a new softness—a compassion for herself that doesn’t require total collapse to feel human.
Across her career, Medford has cultivated a body of work defined by emotional precision and dynamic force—guitars that lurch from whisper to rupture, melodies that carry both ache and defiance. Her songs interrogate identity not as a fixed condition, but as something negotiated daily. Often associated with a lineage of confessional indie rock, she has been labeled a “sad girl,” an archetype she once embraced, whether as armor or proof of depth. But her trajectory has never been about sadness itself; it has been about understanding it, metabolizing it, and ultimately refusing to be reduced by it. Shiverstruck was written during her second year living in New York City, a period that shaped her in ways both profound and messy. In 2023, to make ends meet amidst the increasingly unsustainable economies of touring and streaming as an independent musician, Medford put her strengths as a songwriter to the test, taking an unexpected job working with children. "Singing to babies, leading classes, playing guitar, dancing in circles, singing about sheep, frogs, trains, trees...you name it. It was absurd in one register but transformative in another,” Medford expounds "Watching children respond to music for the first time; their faces lighting up completely unselfconscious, it rewires your brain as a songwriter and steers you more towards honesty. Everything felt immediate and real.”
Simultaneously, Medford was confronting the less visible pressures of the industry around her. There were moments that tested not just her career, but her sense of agency as a working musician within it. She saw AI-generated IAN SWEET soundalikes impersonating her music show up as official IAN SWEET releases on streaming platforms and had to fight off confusion among fans. In another instance, Medford ound out that her music was being used by a popular production house for a film trailer, without permission or payment for its licensing. Upon confronting them, she was only then offered compensation if she signed an NDA, agreeing to not mention the situation had ever occurred at all (Medford declined). Although these experiences proved frustrating, they clarified something: Medford would not ascribe to the unspoken expectation for women in music to stay agreeable and absorb the impact quietly. This sentiment lends itself to the album single "Wildheart." “I used to define myself by sadness, and would wear the ‘saddest girl in the room’ superlative like a badge of honor,” Medford explains, “But I’ve let that go. I exist beyond that narrative, even while still feeling deeply. The ‘wild heart’ idea is what keeps me moving through fear, doubt, and the pressure of this industry. I’m just trying to exist beyond my insecurities and beyond what anyone else thinks of me.” That shift shaped Shiverstruck into something that began to feel less like documentation and more like manifestation—intuitive signals pointing toward changes she hadn’t yet consciously named.
